I DROVE INTO THIS WORLD
On the December day I was born
in my father’s 1931 Model-A Ford.
He taught me how to drive while
I was still in my mother’s womb—
using a sign language of braille
which I learned before being born.
He taught me everything I know—
including how to find nightcrawlers
with a flashlight, bait a hook, and
fly-cast for trout. I never ate so many
fish as in the dark days of the Depression.
He also showed me how to be a good
human being. My father loved being
a father and I loved being his son,
and now my son loves being a father
to his son.
